Trade fairs: the gym you never asked for

Attending an exhibition is a sport.
You walk kilometers in stiff shoes, smile until your cheeks hurt, and nod at machines you can’t possibly fit in your living room.

But it’s worth it. In Jakarta, at Indonesia Energy & Engineering, you don’t just meet people, you feel the future of mining.

Indonesia is a mining giant. Nickel, coal, strategic minerals… you name it, they dig it. And mining here is not slowing down. Quite the opposite: the appetite for raw materials is global, and Indonesia is sitting on a buffet.

Why was I there? With Fujian South Highway Machinery Co., Ltd(NFLG), a Chinese equipment manufacturer. Our crushers and screens don’t look as spectacular as a 300-ton excavator or dump truck, but they make the hauling roads possible, those giant arteries without which no mine survives.

Asking local industry veterans : 20 years ago, this fair was a Western show. Today? China everywhere. Excavators, dump trucks, crushers, even mining tires twice the size of an adult. It’s like wandering in a Jurassic Park of machines, except the dinosaurs are made in Shandong.

Markets evolve faster than our mental maps. While Western brands were busy consolidating, Chinese companies took the field, big, bold, and in numbers. Standing there with NFLG I could see the center of gravity of mining equipment supply shifting.
To understand where the mining world is heading, don’t just look at the pits. Look at who’s selling the tools.
